Our Alaskan Summer Vacation

July 19, 2016

Two weeks ago we went on a cruise to Alaska with Celebrity Cruise Lines. And yes, we definitely sang the “I’m on a Boat” song about 100 times. It was my first time on a cruise ship, and to be honest I was a little bit nervous. I still need to travel with my wheelchair incase I get too tired to walk and I was afraid that the ship would be too tiny…um…yeah, I had no idea that cruise ships were just basically floating islands with plenty of space to move around on them. The crew was super sweet and friendly when it came to helping me in my wheelchair and so was our room porter. Don’t know what a “porter” is? It’s okay, I didn’t know who he was either. Basically, you get a person assigned to your room who does everything for you. They clean the room twice a day, place chocolate on your bed every night, check on you everyday to see how you are doing, give you chocolate, put away your clothes, and did I mention that they give you chocolate??!! We felt like royalty the whole time we were on the ship. Coming back home was kind of a let down. It’s not like I can just pay someone to clean my room twice a day and put chocolate on my pillow every night, right?

Anyway, we spent 7 days on the cruise ship and 3 days in Seattle. We docked in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, (all places in Alaska), and then we spent an evening in Victoria, Canada. We also had the opportunity to see the Dawes Glacier up close, which was a breath-taking experience. We went open-sea kayaking, hiking, rode motor-bikes, went to a silent-disco*, visited an aquarium, walked around Pike’s Place, ate a lot of delicious fish, we both got tattoos, and came face-to-face with a wild bear.

It was our first “real” vacation since our honeymoon, and it was exactly what we needed. Getting outside our house, out of Arizona, and away from the difficult year we have had was the best thing we could have done. We came back excited for this next year and ready for everything God has in store for us.

*at a silent disco everyone wears headphones that are playing different stations and people dance, but if you are watching from afar, people are just jumping up and down in silence. It is a hilarious thing to witness.

Here is a video from our trip, followed by a few of my favorite photos. Enjoy!  ~ taylor
